Snow Surge in Late March Boosts
North Idaho’s Water Outlook

Late March snowfall brought North Idaho's snowpack to near or above normal levels, boosting the region's water supply outlook. Reservoirs like Coeur d’Alene and Priest Lake are above average, though some basins still lag behind. Despite improvements, drought persists in parts of the state, particularly near the Idaho-Montana border. Read More…

Sandpoint Arson Suspect
Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge

A woman charged in the destructive Fourth of July fire that leveled Army Surplus 1 in downtown Sandpoint has reportedly pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, according to a social media post from the business.

Jennifer S. Meyer, 50, had been facing a first degree arson charge since her arrest in July 2024. The fire, which broke out on Independence Day, reduced the long-standing local business to ashes. Army Surplus 1 had operated in Sandpoint for over 40 years, with 33 of those years at its downtown location. Read More…

Idaho’s Child Tax Credit Set to Expire in 2025 Without Legislative Action

Idaho’s nonrefundable child tax credit, a policy aimed at helping families offset the cost of raising children, is on track to expire at the end of 2025 unless lawmakers act to renew it.

The credit, worth up to $205 per child, was established in 2018 to ease the tax burden for families following changes in the federal tax code. It has remained a staple in state tax filings for families with dependents under 18. However, unlike some tax benefits that are built into long-term law, this one was designed with a sunset clause — meaning it ends unless actively extended. Learn More…

Idaho Officials Call for Cleaner Public Lands as Spring Recreation Picks Up

As warmer weather arrives and Idaho's vast public lands welcome more outdoor enthusiasts, state officials are reminding visitors to help preserve these natural spaces by practicing responsible recreation—especially when it comes to litter.

Spring in Idaho often reveals the careless remains of past visitors: fast-food wrappers, beverage cans, and even discarded furniture and appliances dumped across forests, rangelands, and waterways. Not only does this trash spoil the scenic beauty, but it also endangers wildlife, creates hazards for other users, and burdens public agencies with cleanup costs.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game, along with other state and federal agencies, is urging people to pack out all garbage, including spent shell casings and target debris left behind by recreational shooters. Despite the availability of nearby waste disposal options, some individuals continue to leave trash in remote areas.
