The Museum of North Idaho (MONI) has been preserving and sharing the rich history of the Coeur d’Alene region for 57 years. With a vast collection of over 8,000 artifacts, 39,000 photographs, and thousands of archival documents, MONI tells the stories of North Idaho’s diverse past—from early explorers and the Schitsu’umsh people to the lumber and mining industries. In April 2025, the Museum will open its new home in the beautifully restored JC White House, offering visitors an expanded and modern space to explore the region’s heritage.

In addition to its exhibits, MONI actively engages the community through historical walking tours, lectures, and interactive events. Looking ahead, the Museum plans to expand with a 5,000 square foot underground addition to house state-of-the-art exhibits and archival storage. As a hub for education and community connection, MONI continues to honor its mission: "Preserving and Illuminating Our Past to Inspire Our Future.

Supreme Court Halts Trump-Era Deportations Over Due Process Violations

The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to deport 176 Venezuelans from North Texas using the Alien Enemies Act, citing violations of due process. The Court found that the administration’s 24-hour removal notice failed to provide adequate legal recourse. While not ruling on the law’s overall legality, the justices emphasized the seriousness of deporting individuals to harsh conditions abroad without proper legal review. The case has been sent back to the 5th Circuit Court for reconsideration. Read More…

House GOP Pushes Bill to Speed Up Western Public Land Sales

A group of House Republicans is pushing forward legislation that could make it easier for the federal government to sell off public lands in the western United States, sparking concern among conservationists and some local officials.

The proposed bill, introduced by Rep. Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, would amend a longstanding federal law to streamline how small parcels of federal land—typically 300 acres or less—are transferred to local or state governments, or private entities. Supporters argue the changes would reduce bureaucratic delays and empower local communities, particularly in the rural West, where federally managed land often surrounds towns and limits development.
