Idaho to End Paid Caregiver Program
for Parents of Disabled Children

Idaho will officially phase out a key program that allowed parents of children with disabilities to be paid as caregivers, following a recent federal decision. The program, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic as a temporary solution, will end after receiving final approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The program was originally implemented to address caregiver shortages and reduce exposure to the virus. It allowed eligible parents to receive compensation through Medicaid for providing in-home care to their children with significant medical needs. While advocates and families have praised the program for offering stability and preventing institutionalization, state officials have maintained that it was never meant to be a permanent solution.
