While Idaho might be best known for its mountains and lakes, few realize that it once played a critical role in global naval history. During World War II, the small town of Bayview, located on the southern edge of Lake Pend Oreille, became the unlikely site of what would grow into the world’s second-largest naval training base.

The Farragut Naval Training Station was established in 1942, leveraging Lake Pend Oreille’s deep, calm waters to train sailors far from any coastline.
