First Sockeye of the Season Reaches Redfish Lake, Continuing Idaho Tradition

In late July, Idaho welcomed its first returning sockeye salmon of the year to the Redfish Lake Creek trap near Stanley. This annual event, once uncertain due to the species’ declining numbers, has become a celebrated sign of summer in the state’s central mountains.

Sockeye salmon in Idaho’s upper Salmon River Basin face one of the longest and most challenging freshwater migrations in the world. They travel about 900 miles from the Pacific Ocean and climb more than 6,500 feet in elevation to reach their spawning grounds.
